Accessing Databases from the Rapides Parish Library Website
1. Go to www.rpl.org.
2. Scroll down, and on the right, click on "Louisiana Library Connection Databases."
3. Towards the top in the third column, click on "Reference."
4. Click the first option "Academic Search Complete" ("Please wait while this database is being contacted").
7. In the search box labeled "Find," type in key words of your research topic . It will help to do a Boolean search (which means using quotation marks). Example: "Edna St. Vincent Millay" or "Edna St. Vincent Millay" + biography
8. Before you click on "Search," make sure that you have checked off "Full Text." It also helps to click United States under "Geography" tab, as well as trying just "Magazines" first. This helps to make a more limited search and will actually give you hits with articles that you can either view as HTML or sometimes PDF files. You can email them to yourself.
9. After you get your hits, notice on the left of the screen where it says "Narrow Results by Subject." You can click on that to get more detailed hits.
10. Many other databases are available through the RPL. Use any of them that
are appropriate to your topic to your advantage.
